For Cee’s weekly photo challenge on the subject of Light and Dark to illustrate contrast, I am submitting this simple photo of the entrance to Tyne Cot First World War Cemetery in Zonnebeke, Belgium.
I see various aspects to the Light and Dark motif:
- The dark stones used in the outside wall that contrast with the white gravestones within.
- The fact that no matter how light your mood is outside the cemetery, when you enter, you will be overcome by dark thoughts of why so many young men had to die.
- The fact that while some visitors will see light at the end of the tunnel by being able to see the gravestone of their beloved relative or friend, many visitors will remain in the dark, as 8,369 of the 11,956 gravestones are unnamed.
